What's Seitan?
Seitan is a popular plant-based protein often used as a meat substitute. Traditionally, seitan is made from the protein found in wheat. Snapper Creek Jerky seitan is made of wheat gluten mixed with lentils and herbs, giving it a meat-like texture and rich complex flavor. When seitan is made with a base of lentils instead of just wheat gluten, it becomes a slightly different product. The lentils add additional nutrients, including fiber, minerals, and protein, making the seitan more nutritionally diverse than the traditional version.
Protein Content:
Traditional seitan made purely from wheat gluten is very high in protein, with around 20 grams of protein per 100 grams (for reference, about the same protein content as chicken thighs or lean ground beef). Though our seitan will have slightly less protein, lentils contribute essential amino acids, particularly lysine, which is relatively low in wheat gluten. This combination can lead to a more balanced amino acid profile, making lentil-based seitan a more complete protein source.Overall, lentil-based seitan is a nutritious and protein-rich alternative to traditional seitan, with the added benefits of fiber and micronutrients from the lentils.
